AUDIENCE: High School to Adult

These videos are intended to be an instructional aid in conjunction with professional instruction. The production shows four unique scenarios from preflight through landing and presents common failures in technique and judgment, strong statistics validating these errors, and replays of correct decision making for each blunder. All the scenarios are edited with live footage, digital effects, flight simulation, statistical information, and the personal comments of a professional instructor.

Each video's content is appropriate for public libraries and the intended high school through adult audiences. Bob Hoover, an acrobatic demonstration pilot, hosts these productions and introduces other narrators. The well-organized subject matter flows nicely from one topic to the next using each scenario to point out different problem areas in Preflight Preparation and Takeoff, Cruise and En Route, Approach and Landing, and Your Body in Flight. The scenarios are creatively designed and well played. This format has only one shortcoming. Only a limited number of points can be addressed in each scenario. This explains why there are four volumes to the series and why the material is meant only for review or as an aid to professional instruction. The accompanying study guide was not available at the time of this review. However, as the video made no reference to one, its absence did not detract from the impact of the material presented. (Accompanying study guides now available online)

The composition of scenes is excellent and includes many angles of the aircraft as well as tight shots of instruments, controls, and actions. The use of picturemation for some of the action outside the cockpit is well done, and the legibility of titles, subtitles, and statistics is very good. The digital effects and animated flight simulation is not only of excellent quality, but very useful in making the point: all of the effects and displays are relevant and helpful. The audibility and fidelity of sound is very good. This includes the audible thoughts of the pilots mixed with authentic aircraft sound effects and regular interruptions by two or more narrators.

The videos will be best applied as instructional aids in the classroom, for an experienced pilot who would avoid complacency, or as a source of information for a complete novice. The combined running time of two-and-a-half hours is completely packed with useful and relevant information about the common dangers of flying and how to avoid them. I highly recommend this series for public and university libraries.
